Addictions can make a persons life enjoyable in the short term, but unhappy and depressing in the long term
Whether the addiction is with a hard drug or something like a type of food, the psychological process is the same. A tolerance is built up and then the substance is needed to keep the person at the same level of psychological happiness. But with this comes feelings of guilt, low self-esteem and a realisation that in fact, the substance is causing more unhappiness than happiness.
Worries about cancer if you smoke, weight if you overeat, the health implications and the worsening of behaviour if you are on hard drugs or even alcohol, the money if you're a gambler. All of these are much stronger than the short term rewards you believe you are receiving.
A form of counselling and therapy can help you remove these addictions from your life, and as you do experience the freedom, you suddenly realise just how the addiction was working. You were using a substance to try and make you feel better about a place that the substance had put you in the first place. i.e. overeating because you feel so depressed at being fat!
