So What is Dual Reactive Therapy?

The philosophy behind Dual Reactive Therapy is this:

We all start at point B (birth) and end at point D (death) on a life continuum line. For a person to feel happy and content they must be able to psychologically move up and down that line whatever age they may be. This allows the mind to find the appropriate state and feelings which will allow you to fully enjoy that ‘moment’ in your life.

B____________________________________________________________________D
5 years 30 years 75 years ?

So let’s imagine a happy 40 year old person. At times when they want to enjoy themselves, (perhaps dancing at a local disco) their psyche must be able to regress back along the life continuum line and remember a ‘child-like’ state that allows the person to dance without the fear of being judged,, feel foolish, or have an internal voice telling them they should act more sensibly. In this way they can let themselves go and enjoy the ‘moment.’

Perhaps the next day they are thinking about meeting their boss, and their psyche needs to be able to project forward and ‘plant’ this projection into their future without any worries, doubts or anxieties. In this way the person’s future is bright and they can enjoy the moment they are living now, because the future is bright and positive.

Now let’s imagine another 40 year old person. They have had some past negative experience. It might be they were bullied at school, suffered abuse, or just have a memory of being unconfident as a child. Or it may that a few years previously their partner left them. On their life continuum line there’s now block because the unconscious mind wants’ to protect them from this past event, so won’t travel down the life continuum line to find the resources the person needs to enjoy moments. Because of this, projected fears and anxieties develop further along the life continuum line. So the future is now blocked with projected fears and anxieties (many of which may be unfounded) Now the unconscious mind is trying to protect the person from feeling those ‘bad times’ both in the past and the future. Because of this the person is unable to enjoy life at this moment, and starts living in their head, always worrying about what did happen (whether factual or not) and might happen in the future. The unconscious mind is now reacting against 2 psychological blocks and the energy needed to push against these can manifest itself in unhappiness, depression or simply ‘what’s the point’ thinking.

By using various types of therapy, gradually the real or perceived blocks are removed to allow the person to become complete and whole again. Once this happens and the ‘hear and now’ can be enjoyed, the second part of the therapy is to develop a full and complete life. This looks at diet, relationships, hobbies, goals, and works towards ways of experiencing passion, excitement and challenges which helps the person develop into a ‘whole being.’ By doing this you take complete control of your own destiny, allowing you to create the life you want.

So if you use other therapy techniques, what’s the difference in Dual Reactive Therapy?

Most therapies have one way of working, and a belief system behind that approach. For example, CBT, NLP, Life Coaching and Solution Focused Therapy look at moving you forward and are not so concerned about your past. Psychodynamic and Analytical therapies look at your past, but may not teach you how to use positive thought patterns or behaviours, and will not look towards the future so much. Many counselling models allow you a safe place to explore feelings, but do not provide you with tools you can use yourself to become a more complete person

The real advantage of Dual Reactive Therapy is it takes a complete approach and looks at both ends of the life continuum line. The skill of the therapist is having a full knowledge in how to work with various approaches and when the right approach is right at the time. Very few therapists are happy and confident working this way and it takes great skill to get the balance right.

So how long does it take?

Like many therapies, it’s difficult to give precise time scales. With psychodynamic counselling you could be looking at 1-2 years. With many counselling models, 1 year may be a realistic figure.
With CBT and NLP, 6-10 sessions could be enough.
None of these take the complete approach.

With Dual Reactive therapy, we aim to make it as quick as possible, but as it covers such a vast amount of work, realistically you should be prepared to experience this life changing approach for between 4-6 months. Some need less, some need longer.

So what happens?

You and your therapist form a team. The first session is looking at the work that needs to be done, and discussing the best approach. From that point onwards the therapy is solution focused, so although a problem is highlighted, more time is spent on the solution to the problem, rather than the problem itself.
Each session builds on the previous, and gradually the psychological blocks are removed.

Is there anyone not suitable for this therapy?

Yes. If a person has suffered trauma, then they may not be psychologically sound enough to enter Dual Reactive Therapy. In this case, some pre-work will be needed.
Also, this therapy needs commitment from the client. There is further work to carry out outside the session times. If a client can’t commit to the work, time or the costs, then a different approach may be best.

And how much does it cost?

The first 10 sessions are £65.00 per session. The next 10 are £55.00. If any further were needed they are £50.00 per session
