PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is the name for either/and, Psychological or Physical problems that can sometimes follow threatening, distressing or traumatic events.
Some of the events maybe:
A major disaster
Rape or sexual, physical or emotional abuse
War
Witnessing something horrific
Being involved in a serious accident
A traumatic child birth
PTSD can also be more complex. It can develop in other ways as well. For example.
Being around someone who has suffered in some way, and you take on their suffering
Imagining an horrific incident that might happen in the future
Going over and visualising something that did happen in the past which may not have caused PTSD at the time
Being caught up mentally with a current news event (i.e., a childs abduction)
Although its rare for the above to create PTSD in people, it can happen.
The Criteria for PTSD
After a traumatic event, its not uncommon for a person to experience distressing symptoms, and these should subside after a month.
Some of the symptoms could be flashbacks, nightmares, hot and cold sweats, panic attacks or a morbid feeling that something else similar to the event will happen again.
If any of these symptoms persist after 1 month, you may be diagnoses with PTSD. The first step would be to visit your GP. The GP may prescribe medication.
This can be effective in some cases, but if not, you may wish to seek out psychological treatment.
Tom has fully trained in PTSD, and works with PTSD in London and Basingstoke. Some of this training was with The Mindfields College, and also at The Royal Society of Medicine. Also Tom includes his NLP and CBT training within the package of treatment. Some of the treatment may be as follows;
Initial work straight after the event. This would be general help, advice and information. This would not include intervention work as this can make the experience worse.
After 4 weeks, if the problem persists, the following would be used.
The NLP dissociative rewind technique. This helps remove the fear response from the amygala (a small part of the brain which is activated in PTSD) and helps the negative neural pathways in the brain that are partly to blame for the effects of PTSD to close down and become inactive. This has been found to be as affective, if not more, than EMDR therapy.
CBT which will help you change your cognitions (thoughts) and behaviour to bring about a positive change.
Counselling and reframing to help you move on from the incident and feelings.
Most of the above are within the NHS guidelines for NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence)
If you feel you suffer from PTSD and would like some advice, please contact Tom. This is an awful thing to experience, but with the right therapy, it can be treated and your life can move on.
